5 Points to Remember When Your Child Enlists in the Military

January 19, 2018 by info@3QuartersToday.com

Staying Positive: 5 Points to Remember When Your Child Enlists in the Military

It’s happened: your child has decided to enlist in the military.

This decision brings with it a mixture of anxiety surrounding the unknown as well as an eagerness to support them in their journey.

Don’t panic!

5 things to remember when your child enlist in the military

Balancing these emotions can certainly be difficult. Even with all of the resources that we have available to us in this modern age, it is hard when your child tells you they want to enlist in the military.

By focusing more on the positive aspects that will coincide with your child’s enlistment, you are more apt to approach the situation from an optimistic, mindful standpoint. After all, it is certainly not “bad” news!

Your child is about to embark on an honorable journey that will leave them more disciplined, educated, and well-rounded than they were before they left. Below are some key encouraging points to keep in mind when coming to terms with your child’s enlistment:

1. Advancements in technology equate to more communication.

Your son or daughter may not be able to consistently communicate with you during training. However, there are many ways to keep in touch with them during their time on base.

Tips on how to handle the news when your child tells you they are enlisting in the military

Although many military personnel still love getting snail mail, innovative technology gives us a variety of options to thoroughly communicate. Whether it be video chatting, e-mail, texting, or even engagement on social media, you are sure to have the means to communicate on various platforms.

It is important to note that internet access is not always reliable, especially overseas.  But most military personnel do have the ability to check in with their family to ease their worries at fairly regular intervals.

2. Enlistment opens the door to free education.

Thanks to the Post-9/11 GI Bill, military personnel are eligible for up to $50,000 toward their education costs.

These funds can go toward college coursework, vocational classes, on-site job training, and even tutoring resources, if necessary. The only stipulation is that they have to adhere to the payment obligations that are set forth during their first year of service.

We all know how student loan debt can often hold individuals back for a long time before they have access to financial freedom.

Having the military pay for your child’s education fully, or even partially, is a fantastic benefit that will serve them well over their lifetime.

3. Your child will never worry about job security.

Wondering if our children will have financial independence and stability when without us is easily at the forefront of our minds as parents.

Staying positive when your child enlists in the military. Military provides opportunities for young men and women they would never have in the civilian world.

Enlisting in the military gives your son or daughter the ultimate job security due to the nature of the contracts that recruits sign. This binds them to their service for a set period. It is very rare for personnel to be fired unless the reasons approach treason, corruption, or some other seriously heinous act.

As an active duty military member, your child will receive a dependable salary along with compensation for amenities such as rent, utilities, and even fuel costs. This is much more than what most young adults gain directly upon finishing school.

Some struggle with securing these needs for their entire lives. You can find peace in knowing that your child will not.

4. Healthcare is always within reach.

Military personnel are offered policies by a company called TRICARE which gives them access to free or affordable healthcare, including dental. Situations, where they may need an ambulance, will be completely covered and should never result in hefty bills or other unexpected healthcare costs.

The military relies on the strength and well-being of its service members; therefore, the best care is available to them to keep them up to high military standards!

Knowing that your child’s health will always be a priority is imperative to any parent. Military personnel are provided with inexpensive or free care with military-specific HMO plans.

5. Support groups are always available.

Staying positive when your child enlists in the military. If you’re ever feeling like you need to talk with others who understand, there are many support groups, both online and locally-based, that can meet you with the empathy that you need.

Other military parents can give you insightful tips. Like avoiding too much media consumption! They also provide reassurance like knowing that you will be first to be notified if anything should go wrong.

They’ve been there, done that, and know the drills. Hearing tips from someone who is in your shoes, or has been in the past, will give comfort. Sometimes you just need someone to give you peace of mind.

It is normal to feel a sense of fear and uncertainty when your child is about to enlist. These emotions are warranted. However, it is important to realize the significant benefits that go along with your child building a future involving the military.

While we live in an era where we have access to unlimited forms of support and resources it sometimes makes it even scarier. Even the most uncertain times can become a bit more bearable with the right tools and support.

USMC Birthday Message to Marine Corps Parents

November 9, 2017 by info@3QuartersToday.com

In years past I have written my USMC Birthday message to the Commandant of the Marine Corps or to the U.S. Marines in general.

United States Marine Corps Birthday 2017

I am now addressing the new Marine Corps parents and families. Being a Mother of three Marines gives me a different perspective than my first year. Marine history, traditions, and responsibilities I understand more than ever.

Yes, I WAS that nervous Marine Corps boot camp Mom who couldn’t hold her camera still due to my hands shaking. I wear Marine Mom clothing and have my share of Marine decor around the house.

After attending three Marine Corps graduations and listening to my Marines complain has given me a thicker skin. My viewpoint is a little different.  It is said, “Once a Marine, Always a Marine” and the saying is also true. Once a Marine Mom, always a Marine Mom.

The United States Marine Corps teaches new recruits to become independent adults. We notice the initial change during the family day and graduation. Our new Marines stand taller, more confident, and have an air about them that is sometimes completely foreign to the son or daughter that left home 13 weeks earlier.

USMC Letter to Parents

“Dear Marine Corps Parents,

Marine Moto Run on Family Day

Your new Marine is has been put through the toughest military training and has NOT been babied. They have NOT been coddled. You may cry a little inside when they tell you stories of boot camp. You probably did when you read their letters from home. It is said it takes three weeks to form new habits. Your Marine formed new habits and broke old ones.

Trust in the Corps, trust in your sons and daughters. USMC training is tough, it is meant to be. It prepares them for their duties ahead, it prepares them deployment, for war, for battle, and for life after the Marines.

When your Marine complains, bite your tongue, don’t enable but encourage. If they say they are broke and have no money, don’t send any. Seriously, don’t.

A message to new Marine Corps parents as they attend their first Marine Corps Graduation

Marines HAVE money.  According to my THREE Marines, they have expendable income. Their rent, utilities are paid. Your Marine needs to learn to manage money better. Drinking, tattoos, pizza three times a week and the cursed vending machines suck them dry. Mess hall food IS edible. It is not Mom’s home cooking, but it’s better than MRE’s if they are deployed.

New Marines don’t need new vehicles. The payments coming out of their check and insurance could easily pay for a good pre-owned car and plane tickets home.

Gold EGA- US Marine Corps Wrapping Paper
Gold EGA- US Marine Corps Wrapping Paper
by usmarines

Marines do NOT have to pay to have their taxes done. On every base, there are free tax services provided. An appointment is all that is needed. Signs are posted on bulletin boards as tax time approaches. They can also deduct all uniform and haircut expenses. That $9.00 haircut every week adds up. New boots, dress cover? Save receipts.

Did you know they can also be saving money for savings and retirement every paycheck? A class on financial responsibility is given in boot camp. They can designate a portion of their paycheck during the boot camp class and years later they will have thousands of dollars saved. Most will even forget about it and have a nice nest egg for a new car or down payment on a house when they get out.

The Marine Corps gives every Marine an opportunity to earn college credits, volunteer at civic organizations, and advancement in rank and pay. It’s a system of rewarding achievement. Challenge coins, ribbons, Marine of the Month, Quarter and LOAs (letters of achievement) can be earned and stay with them in their record.

Encourage your new Marine to participate, “embrace the suck” and when they receive their DD214’s at the end of service they will come to work in the “real world” is a piece of cake compared to the Corps. It is rare that a Marine enjoys their enlisted career, but it is rare that they don’t talk about it and stand a little taller when they get out. The camaraderie is one that remains for a lifetime. Once a Marine, Always a Marine.

So Semper Fi parents, breathe, relax and enjoy the ride!

Best regards,

A Marine Mom

USMC Graduation is the time for new beginnings for both Marines and their parents

A USMC Birthday Message From a Thankful Marine Mom

November 9, 2016 by info@3QuartersToday.com

My USMC Birthday Message

Happy Birthday Marine Corps

This will be my fourth year writing a USMC Birthday message to the United States Marine Corps.

Last year I was anticipating attending a third USMC Boot camp graduation at MCRD San Diego. It is with our 3rd Marine son in mind that I write this letter, and my appeal for all new Marines to watch, learn, and carry forth the tradition of Semper Fidelis Marines.

Marine Mom shirts are perfect gifts for a Mother with a son or daughter in the United States Marine Corps.

Letter from a USMC Mom

Dear Marine Corps

I sit here on the eve of the Marine Corps Birthday with nothing to write. Seriously. In years pasts I’ve written to you that I am proud to be associated with the finest branch of the United States military.

I have expressed a military Moms pride, I have thanked you and have appealed for increased military leadership in the US Marines.

But this year, I struggle to put words down. Why?

Maybe because you have taught this Marine Mom well. I don’t worry about my sons. They are in good hands. The USMC has taught them to survive, to take the bad with the good, and embrace “The Suck.”

Never have I been that helicopter Mom who hovers and micromanages my kids. But it is only natural for a Mother to worry. I do see this in other Marine Moms, however, who worry if their sons and daughters are getting enough to eat, or is their drill instructor being too mean.

New Marine Moms struggle with the empty nest syndrome and lack of “instant communication” during boot camp.

They wonder if their sons and daughters are getting enough to eat, is their drill instructor being too mean? Those are just some of the worries. These are eliminated during the USMC graduation family day, however.

If you know a USMC Mom then you always know what to get them. More Marine Mom shirts.

Seriously, they can't have enough.

Read my previous letters to the USMC and the Commandant below

How One Business Recognizes Military Appreciation Month and RED Friday

May 5, 2016 by info@3QuartersToday.com

Military Appreciation Month

The United States Military is a vital part of our countries defense and the men and women who serve in the Armed Forces sacrifice on a daily basis with their time, health and many times their lives. Military families, wives, children and parents worry about their safety at home and abroad. It is a duty often overlooked, but one business is going the extra step and making sure their military employees and customers are recognized and honored.

Jefferson Bank decided to use RED Friday on May 6th, the official Military Spouse Appreciation day, to kick off Military Appreciation Month.

I learned about this story when I received an email from the bank Vice President who wanted to purchase a very large order of buttons. Naturally I was curious, being a Marine Mom I designed this button with the hope that it would inspire people to wear it on Fridays and show their support of the military. I have had a son deployed in the USMC to Afghanistan and will most likely have another, since I have three Marines. When I found out more I just had to write about it and share.

RED Friday Button to Remember Everyone DeployedRED Friday Button to Remember Everyone Deployed

&

The R.E.D. Friday buttons are a reminder to Remember Everyone Deployed and has become a national movement in the military community.

How Jefferson Bank Supports the Military

I found out that an employee, who is a military spouse, first brought RED Friday to the attention of her fellow employees. They wore RED shirts to Friday softball games and it became a tradition. The bank is located in an area with a strong military presence and several employees are either military, military spouses, veterans, or have family serving in the military.

But the bank wanted to do more, so the buttons were one step. There are many activities planned for the month, but one of the things they did was purchase RED Friday buttons for all of their employees and provide to their customers. Each Friday in May they will pay tribute to the individual employees who will tell their military story. Please, if you are in the area come into one of their branches, pick up a button and tell them thank you for their support.

Visit the Jefferson Bank Facebook page, located in Houston Texas.Jefferson Bank, has eleven locations in the Houston area and is an independent, family owned bank going back three generations. How often do you hear of a family owned bank anymore. They sincerely care about not only their employees, but their customers, and it shows by their Facebook page.

It is nice to see a company adopting RED Friday of recognizing our soldiers, Marines, sailors and airman and I hope the trend continues throughout the year. I salute Jefferson Bank on this initiative and hope it becomes an annual tradition. I also challenge other businesses to show your support of the military, not only during Military Appreciation Month, but all year.

All it takes is a little button. Imagine if your waitress, or flight attendant on Southwest Airlines wore a simple RED Button and it started a conversation, a dialogue, and an appreciation of our military families nationwide?

Send your friends to the Jefferson Bank Facebook page and tell them thank you. Spread the news and let’s show everyone we love, honor, respect, and support our troops.

Origins of RED Friday

It is said that R.E.D Friday started in 2006 by two wives of Canadian servicemen as a way of showing solidarity to our troops deployed in Afghanistan. But many military wives have been wearing RED shirts for many years before the “movement” was announced. RED also in remembrance of the American Legion Red Poppy Campaign.
United States Marines graduation ceremony at MCRD San Diego

It is a small way to let military families know we are thinking of them and salute their service to our country. Although it is mainly a red shirt tradition people who have company dress codes choose to wear ribbons or buttons.  If you would like to be a part of the RED Friday movement I have several shirts, buttons and items in my Zazzle Store. Let’s spread the word and get more companies on board.

Stories of a WWII Navy Veteran on the Edison Destroyer, a Story Rarely Told

November 10, 2015 by info@3QuartersToday.com

Stories of WWII Navy Veterans

Every year around Memorial Day and Veterans Day I add a little bit more to my Dad’s military story I never heard when he was alive.

WWII Naval Veteran who served on two destroyers

Like many World War II veterans, they rarely talked about their wartime years and service. My Dad’s seabag was lost in New York City at Times Square when he returned home. All of his papers, records, uniforms, and medals were lost.

My Dad was one of those veterans. The terms shell shock, war fatigue, and PTSD were just not discussed, yet emotional withdrawal, depression, and disconnection of life is now something I can see when I look back on my childhood.

PFC Leo T. Tyrrell 1952

After both of my parents died I found a single photo of my Father from the World War II era. From this photo, I started searching records, learned the names of the Navy Destroyers on what he served. This is just the beginning.

These were military photos I had NO IDEA existed!

I had an AMAZING phone conversation with not only a WWII veteran who wrote the book Joining the War at Sea, and served on the same ship as my Dad.  He was my Dad’s Gunnery Officer, Captain Dailey on the USS Edison destroyer.

ORDER D-Day Soldier Art Print – Hand Drawn Art – Veterans Day / World War II /

You can read the story of how it came to be here, but I want to chronological list my Dad’s service records in hopes there are others who served during that period.

Maybe you have a have father or Grandfather who served on the same ship.  Or maybe your relative was in the 508th Airborne division during the early 1950’s when he reenlisted in the  82nd Airborne with Leo Tyrrell.

I REALLy want to hear from you. I want to piece together more pieces of my Dad’s Military history

I would love to hear from anyone who had family serve aboard these ships and learn more about my Dad. Maybe there is an oral history recorded.

Maybe your Dad or Grandfather told stories of the days escorting battleships across the Atlantic, firing against the German Nazi’s or dodging the Kamikaze planes in the Pacific.

The dates and locations below are taken from the book Joining the War at Sea 1939-1945 written by Captain Franklyn Dailey.

When I spoke to him he was 95 years old and I am so honored to have found him and spoken to him several times. To think he knew and worked with my Dad as his Gunnery Officer gives me chills.

The other pins and patches above are from my Dad’s time in the Army Airborne with the 82nd Airborne, he earned his glider patch and was not only a parachute packer but a quartermaster at the end of his service.

I am a little confused about this glider patch though. I vaguely remember my Dad saying he started planes on the deck of a ship by flipping the propellers.

This was while watching the black and white WWII television series in the 1970s. While doing history on the patch it seems to be a WWII era patch, but maybe someone can clear it up for me.

Below is a running chronological listing of dates, coordinating them with the ship of record. I will continue to update this list as I find specific dates and events.
