Day 230/365: Playing in the Surf

August 9, 2011 by info@3QuartersToday.com

I little water on my toes...
I little water on my toes...

This rock was handy for sitting and getting a little water on my feet. What was I thinking? I know better than this.

OMG, the water is COLD!
OMG, the water is COLD!

By the way, this will be the first and last time I will ever be in a bathing suit and posted on the internet. But heck, it was Block Island, anything is possible there.

Day 229/365: Photo Opportunties on Block Island

August 8, 2011 by info@3QuartersToday.com

From the Inn where we stayed on Block Island, I didn’t have to go far on my Block Island vacation to find photo opportunities. The Narragansett Inn had plenty of scenic areas with boats, water and breath taking sunsets. You might remember that one of our lodging requirements was to be near the water.

The Narragansett Inn has it’s own private beach on the Great Salt Pond. Where the ocean  surf  is invigorating and hypnotic, the Great Salt Pond was calm and relaxing. Two different personalities for different times of the day. Another plus was the water temperature. It’s more relaxing at the end of the day to float in water about 70 degrees Fahrenheit than the 65 or 66 F of the ocean that pushes you around.

Sunset on Block island, another photography opportunity

Who wouldn’t be able to relax with a view like this? I had photo opportunities around every corner, the Block Island sunset was amazing and simply breath taking. People sitting on the porch actually applauded when the sun set.  It was one of two fantastic sunsets we watched from the Narragansett Inn. I just can’t say enough about the Inn where we stayed. It was perfect place in every way.

Day 227/365: Crabbing With a Piece of String and a Hot Dog

August 6, 2011 by info@3QuartersToday.com

I had never been crabbing before and these kids taught me how,  with a few simple tools: a string, a weight and a hot dog. The crabs grab hold of the hot dog and you just pull them up. It’s so cool and so much fun!

Just tie the string around a piece of hot dog and drop it in the water, the crabs run to it, grab on and you pull them up. Summer fun for hours. I wonder if the same thing works for crawdads?

Have You Ever Been Crabbing?

If you crabbed when you were a kid, or have taught your kids what is the best crabbing tip you’ve learned? Did you mainly catch and release (like in fishing) or were you catching for supper? I didn’t know there were crabbing tournaments on the shore. Being a land locked Nebraskan I don’t get the experience of all the festivals around the country.

One day, when we retire and traveling to the beach is on my list I’m going to check out crab festival. I’ve already done the Testicle Festival.

Day 228/365: Graces’ Cove, Block Island, RI

August 6, 2011 by info@3QuartersToday.com

During our stay on Block Island we rented bikes for three days. So glad we did, one late afternoon I took my rented bike, from Aldo’s, and explored the west side of Block Island. The road isn’t near the beach but a sign pointed me to Grace’s Cove and it sounded inviting.

After bike riding a half mile, I hiked down a rocky path and the following oasis is what greeted me.  A view straight our of the Caribbean but in New England.

I could have stayed for hours, but the sun started going down and I had promised my room mate we would eat supper and watch the sunset. Here is the beginning of the show before I left the beach.

Day 218/365: Grinders vs. Subs

August 2, 2011 by info@3QuartersToday.com

American Slang Dialects

I have lived in three distinct areas of the United States, Connecticut, Oklahoma and Nebraska. Each region has a regional dialect and slang for various words. We all know of the nationwide debate between pop, soda, and Coke but there are many other traditions.

I grew up eating “grinders”, pictured above from People’s Choice in East Hartford, but in the Midwest these are called “Submarine” sandwiches, or Subs. The latest made popular by Subway restaurants. In other areas of the country hoagie is the preferred name for a toasted sandwich on a bun.

What’s in a name anyways, what is the history and origin? Garzelli’s restaurant has a theory.

New England "Grinder"
New England “Grinder”

The biggest difference I see is the amount of meat. In Connecticut, the meat comes first and foremost and it’s piled high. At Subway you would never see this much meat.

The definition is as follows:

“A long French or Italian-style bread loaf, filled with meats and cheeses, topped with an assortment of lettuce, peppers, pickles – whatever – with a vinaigrette dressing or mayo.”

American Slang, sub vs. grinder
Turkey Sandwiches are nothing to sneeze at either.

So what do you call it: Grinder, Sub, Hoagie, Poor Boy, Hero? Or maybe something entirely different.
