This rock was handy for sitting and getting a little water on my feet. What was I thinking? I know better than this.
By the way, this will be the first and last time I will ever be in a bathing suit and posted on the internet. But heck, it was Block Island, anything is possible there.
A new tradition on Block Island. Stone stacking. I don’t know how this tradition started, or when, but it was a wonderful surprise when I saw my first stone tower. Some people called them stone cairns, a delicately balanced stack of stones used to mark “I was here”.
From what I can understand cairns were first used by settlers, pioneers, or Native Americans (Indians) to mark a cache of supplies, either to remind themselves where food was hidden under the rocks, or to leave supplies for fellow travelers.
Whatever they are called, I was enthralled by them. One person told me it was good luck to add a stone to the pile, so I did my part.
I wasn’t the only person captivated by The Cairns of Block Island, seems others are fascinated by the smooth stackable rocks on the beach. See how many you can count in this image below.
My favorite shots are those with the ocean and surf in the background. There is solitary about the image that draws you to the location.
I had never been crabbing before and these kids taught me how, with a few simple tools: a string, a weight and a hot dog. The crabs grab hold of the hot dog and you just pull them up. It’s so cool and so much fun!
Just tie the string around a piece of hot dog and drop it in the water, the crabs run to it, grab on and you pull them up. Summer fun for hours. I wonder if the same thing works for crawdads?
If you crabbed when you were a kid, or have taught your kids what is the best crabbing tip you’ve learned? Did you mainly catch and release (like in fishing) or were you catching for supper? I didn’t know there were crabbing tournaments on the shore. Being a land locked Nebraskan I don’t get the experience of all the festivals around the country.
One day, when we retire and traveling to the beach is on my list I’m going to check out crab festival. I’ve already done the Testicle Festival.
During our stay on Block Island we rented bikes for three days. So glad we did, one late afternoon I took my rented bike, from Aldo’s, and explored the west side of Block Island. The road isn’t near the beach but a sign pointed me to Grace’s Cove and it sounded inviting.
After bike riding a half mile, I hiked down a rocky path and the following oasis is what greeted me. A view straight our of the Caribbean but in New England.
I could have stayed for hours, but the sun started going down and I had promised my room mate we would eat supper and watch the sunset. Here is the beginning of the show before I left the beach.
The Narragansett Inn on Block Island RI was perfect for our I “Girls Weekend/Mothers Get Away” on Block Island, Rhode Island. This was a trip we had been dreaming about for over twenty years and it had to be perfect. After many hours searching on the internet for a place to stay at an Inn that was very similar to a bed and breakfast with all the New England and coastal charm found in a travel magazine.

Many of the travel review sites did not have an overall favorable score, but I noticed in 2010 the reviews changed. Seems the original Mott family took over the management again in 2010, after an absence of many years, and starting in 2010 the reviews were the opposite of the previous years. So I decided to call, find out the rates and talk to the manager/owner, and I’m glad I did.

The infamous Narragansett Inn has returned to it’s glory days. Jim Mott, the latest of the 13 generations to live on the island is now the proprietor and from what I could glean from several island residents, the island is happy for their return.
The rooms have all been renovated, and everything is clean and new. It’s still quaint, like an inn should be, you are on a New England seasonal island, so don’t expect five star accommodations. But do expect family hospitality, good food, a relaxing atmosphere, and views that will take your breath away. Our room had two beds, a private bath and was only $199/night. This is during high season when most of the rooms at Inns were $299 or higher.
The Narragansett Inn is one of the original Inns on the island with the main house being built in 1909. Our room was in the original farmhouse, built circa 1709 and we couldn’t have found a better place to stay. The view of the Great Salt Pond was amazing, the sunsets spectacular and the staff extremely friendly. The bike rental shop was basically in the back yard and we had our choice of four restaurants within 100 yards.
It was a great place to kick back. put my feet up, read a book, and relax.
I could have stayed at on Block Island all summer. It was a perfect vacation, just too short.
