Day 224/365: A Ford Classic

August 4, 2011 by info@3QuartersToday.com

A Classic Ford
A Classic Ford

I’m not a car buff, so I don’t know what make, model or year this classic Ford car is, but I’m sure someone might know. Looks circa 1960’s to me, I just thought it was a very cool shot. A friends Dad “collected” cars, his Mom said “Why couldn’t he of collected stamps, or something smaller”

After cleaning out my Mom’s house I’m taking a totally different view of what I “collect”.

Day 223/365: Vintage VW Beetles

August 4, 2011 by info@3QuartersToday.com

I have fond memories of Volkswagon Bugs, or VW Beetles. It was the only car my best friend in high school drove, and in the 1980’s it was almost a disposable car. Pick one up for a couple hundred, drive it till it dropped and get another.

Seriously, my Mother would take bets to see what color he would pull up in. Green, red, yellow, white, orange, convertibles and hard tops, we rode in the full line.  During the summer a convertible was the best way to travel  and my favorite was a little red Beetle convertible.

The doors didn’t always shut correctly and going down the interstate with a semi going by while holding the door was an experience. But hey, we lived. Now we have the stories.

Beach trips were always better in a VW Beetle convertible.  Ok, at night when the wind got cold and the top didn’t go up, it was was chilly, but that’s what beach towels were for and the heater blowing full blast. Now why didn’t the heater work in the winter.

Sad to say, my friend no longer has running VW Bugs, these are the last remaining two of an era and they are for sale. Hopefully someone will buy and restore them to their original splendor and create new memories.

Day 221/365: Shade Tobacco in the Connecticut River Valley

August 3, 2011 by info@3QuartersToday.com

Made in the Shade, Tobacco
Made in the Shade, Tobacco

Growing up in the 1970’s and 80’s in CT there weren’t too many jobs for teenagers between the ages of 13 and 16. You either worked the tobacco fields, the vegetable farms, or babysat. Since my Dad worked for Consolidated Cigar Company (warehouse) for over 25 years until they closed their Glastonbury Connecticut doors in 1986, he figured one person in the family worked in the tobacco industry was enough. So I picked tomatoes for two summers.

Thus my first hand experience is limited, I do know from listening to friends that it was hot, sweaty and tiring. Much like detasseling in Nebraska is now. The CigarLife website has a very good article called Shade Tobacco Days if anyone cares to live vicariously.

The Connecticut River Valley has been known for it’s shade tobacco for hundreds of years and it’s used primarily as the wrapper.

This picture was taken close to Broad Brook Connecticut, near South Windsor.

Day 215/365: Banana Pudding Dessert

July 11, 2011 by info@3QuartersToday.com

Banana Pudding
Banana Pudding

Simple yet delicious dessert. Instant banana pudding, slice up two bananas, place some vanilla wafers strategically around the edge and decorate with Redi-Whip. Disappears fast and it’s fast. It’s so simple I can’t even format a recipe for it, just mix, add and eat.

Day 213/365: American Legion Baseball

July 10, 2011 by info@3QuartersToday.com

My son waited all summer for me to get an action shot of him sliding into base during an American Legion Baseball game. I think he’s happy with this. He played four years of Legion ball and it’s been the best sports experience hands down in the Elmwood-Murdock community. That includes school sports and town ball association participation.

American Legion Baseball
Safe at Third!

The seniors on this team remember their freshman year when many were recruited by classmates to play baseball so they could have a team. Many had not played since T-ball or coach pitch. That first year they didn’t win a game, and got “run ruled” too many times to count. But the coaches were fantastic, thanks Duane and Hank, kept their spirits up and taught them to play and support each other as a team.

Every year they have improved, scores started going up on the board and they even began to win a few games. Those players from four years ago have grown, matured and love to play together. My son even put off his Marine boot camp ship date so he could play baseball one last year.

Congratulations David for sticking with the sport, it’s been a privilege to watch you play, I have thoroughly enjoyed my summers at the ball field. I will miss them.
