Marine Corps Dress Cover

May 23, 2012 by info@3QuartersToday.com

I’ve loved this photo ever since I took when my youngest son graduated from Marine Boot Camp. A Marine in his dress blues is the epitome of pride, honor and commitment. They also look very handsome.

United States Marine Dress Cover
United States Marine Dress Cover

Every part of the Marine Corps uniform is thought out to the smallest detail. The cover issued to boots have a cloth crown (shown above) , some Marines later opt to purchase a white vinyl crown which is more durable. Military uniforms have a lot of history, yet the United States Marine Corps seems to be the one that everyone recognizes as being the best design and the most iconic.

Little brothers of Marines enjoy dressing like their big brothers, pint size dress blues costume to school on veterans day, Halloween, dress like your hero day. I think it’s really really cute and a great way for them to show their support for the military.

Don’t get the idea that an adult could wear it though, that would be called stolen valor and is greatly frowned upon. Don’t do it, EVER!

U.S. Marine in Service Charlies

April 18, 2012 by info@3QuartersToday.com

Nothing is sexier than a Marine in his BCG glasses at boot camp. Or maybe not, considering the nickname for the standard issue Marine eye glasses in 2011 were called “Birth Control Glasses” as in you look like the ultimate nerd, they cover your face, make your eyes look big and even cause Mom (me) to snicker a bit.

U.S. Marine in Service Charlie Uniform

If a recruit wears glasses or contacts they are issued  standard-issue spectacles, S9s or commonly called  or BCG’s “Birth Control Glasses” because they are so ugly that no girl will come near you. They have been a staple in the military and are tough, sturdy and just plain ugly.

Marines joke about them, raze each other, but they are just as  much as they are hated they hold a certain affection amoung the ranks. I just read on the Marine Corp blog they are being retired for those interested “Goodbye Birth Control Glasses” is a very good read.

This image was taken on Family Day at MCRD San Diego after the MotoRun. The new Marines change into their Service Charlies uniform, and garrison hat, or cover (Marines often refer to it as their “piss cutter”.) and then have their first five hour liberty to spend with their families on base.

I have two sons in the U.S. Marine Corp, one stateside and one in Afghanistan and have come across a Twitter theme #WarriorWednesday. So I thought why not start a new theme and feature on my blog. I don’t know how long this will last, but at least until I run out of photos and images. So it might take a while.

This photo started off as “PhotoShopFriday posting until I thought of the #WarriorWednesday. I adjusted the levels, color selected the blue sky, and darkened the blues, used shadows and highlights to open up the shadows on his face and then cropped for a better balanced photo.

Katy Perry’s Video and the Marines Corps

March 27, 2012 by info@3QuartersToday.com

What do Katy Perry and the Marines have in common? In reality, very little. But in Katy Perry’s video, All of Me I am just very pleased to see that she chose the United States Marines to represent the military. The follow-up interviews on MTV show she gained a great deal of respect for our Marines and that I applaud.  She may have been inspired to film at Camp Pendleton since she performed at Pendleton in 2011.

Don’t know what my Marine sons would think, I’m sure my oldest would say a lot. That’s a tease and a challenge to see if he even reads my blog, he was in Afghanistan when this was filmed. My other son who was stationed at Camp Pendleton just missed being there for the filming, I bet he would think it’s cool. (another challenge)

What do you think Katy Perry’s video? Does it inspire? Cheapen? Motivate? Should the Marines use it as their new recruiting video?

I’ve had several people comment to me on Twitter about this video so I thought I would add in the interviews behind the video to give some more background on how she feels about the military and what the men and the respect she has for the men and women in the Marine Corps. Regardless of inaccuracies in the video she wasn’t a prima dona on set.

The Making of the Katy Perry Video, All of Me

The videos below is a four part series highlighting the behind the scenes making of the video.

Yes, the video is full of inaccuracies, women don’t have to cut their hair to be Marines, they don’t bind their chest, you don’t receive your name on your uniform when you arrive, and women train at Paris Island during boot camp and not Camp Pendleton. But Sand Diego is just a hop skip and a jump from Hollywood, hence why MCRD SD Marines are called “Hollywood Marines.
But, it is a very well produced video that inspires women to stand on their own, take charge of their own life. Ok, she’s a little implusive and maybe breaking up with a boyfriend isn’t the best reason for joining the military or the Marine Corps. At least she is not pining away and curled up in a ball like it’s the end of the world either. Oh, right, that’s the series Twilight.
Anyhow, let me know what you think of the video, the Marines, or anything in particular. You might be surprised when you watch the videos and listen to a pop culture stars impressions of the Marine Corps and the military really are, instead of reading them in social media.

Day 165/365: Marine Teaches Recruit to Square Uniform

May 19, 2011 by info@3QuartersToday.com

Didn’t know it would be the United States Marine Corp that would teach my sons to iron, but a squared away uniform is a sense of pride in the Corps. My oldest son gave his recruit brother a lesson and tips  on ironing his uniform and squaring his cover during his latest leave. (home for his brothers high school graduation)

It’s the attention to detail Marine recruits are taught during boot camp at MCRD San Diego or Paris Island. How to properly shine your shoes, iron your uniform, pin your ribbons exactly 1/8″ of an inch from the top of the pocket, and how to clean a toilet and sink to pass inspection.

United States Marine Corps (USMC) And Navy Uniform RegulationsU.S. Marine Corps Uniform Guide (Look Sharp!)

Why do these mundane tasks matter? I believe they are used to teach discipline and patience, to learn how to pay attention to detail in everything a Marine does, regardless of the task.

As a birthday/graduation present received a wore out set of his Marpat desert cammies to wear at the big airsoft game, Oklahoma Invasion 6, coming up Memorial Day weekend. Out of the sea bag the cover looked a bit crumbled. There was no way a Marine would be caught with a cover like this. Before it could be worn it needed squaring away, Marine style. No starch, but water, paper towels, steam, high heat, and cardboard stays would have to do for now.

Never thought I’d ever see this,  a photo opportunity if I ever saw one. The process took an hour, with lessons given on tips and tricks of a great squared away Marine uniform. I overhead Army uniforms are “garbage” and how to properly wear your cover. “It’s not a hat, don’t pull it down on your head, you’ll look like a tool”

Looks better doesn’t it? Sleeve rolling was next, but I left the boys to bond and discuss uniform care. It’s a big part of boot camp, the beginning of teaching attention to detail and discipline. If they pay this much attention to just their uniforms imagine what is required in the other aspects of mission training. No wonder the United States Marine Corps is the best fighting force in the world.
