12 Interesting Facts About Flag Day

June 14, 2013 by info@3QuartersToday.com

Flag Day is rarely observed by a large population of the United States, but it is one of the oldest American Holidays dating back to 1861, in all places, my birth place, Hartford Connecticut. Today take time to celebrate Flag Day with a little flag history, a little patriotic music, and show your pride by waving or displaying an American flag not only today but everyday.

Interesting Facts About Flag Day

Facts About Flag Day

  1. George Morris held the first unofficial Flag Day in 1861, but the idea didn’t catch on. (source)

  11. Flag Day (Holiday Histories)Flag Day (First Step Nonfiction – American Holidays)

While not necessarily a fact on the American flag I though it interesting that the study of flags is called vexillogy

There shouldn’t be a perfect day, or week, to fly the American flag and show patriotism in the United States. It should be a feeling of every American to show their pride in the country in which they live every day. I am proud to live in this great country of ours. We have freedom and opportunity around every corner if people would just take advantage of their own skills and talent.

The below video includes my photography of average Americans celebrating their pride and patriotism in America. The song was written by my friend Steve Raybine, a jazz musician from Omaha Nebraska.

“America, how I love you, long may our flag ever wave..”

Americans are a gracious and generous people. We are proud of our country and the ideals for which we were founded. Religious freedom, freedom of speech, freedom to bear arms, freedom to congregate, and freedom of free press. The internet and technology has given millions of people a vehicle to exercise that freedom and this is my platform.

Season Of Christmas Continues, Day 3

December 27, 2012 by info@3QuartersToday.com

This is the first year my youngest Marine son won’t be home for Christmas.

He’s  a U.S. Marine stationed in California, pulling 24-hour shifts so he can come home on the second block leave.

Christmas tree for my MarineA week before Christmas he called on the phone and reminded me that he wanted LOTS of food when he got home, especially my cookies, pretzels, and venison jerky. Little did he know a care package was on its way with everything included on his list.

Along with all his favorite treats was this tree, don’t know if he put it up (I hope so), but I wanted to send a piece of home his way. (His older brother, stationed in Arizona, also got a care package)

But it is my youngest Marine who got the special treatment this year. He is a corrections officer in the Brigand received the box during his 24 hr “sleep break”. He called and opened the box on the phone with me, which I love.

I got to hear the excitement in his voice as he pulled out the Chocolate Covered Candy Cane Christmas Peeps, Reeses Candy Canes, and deer jerky from the stocking. When he opened the cookie tin, he exclaimed: “Oh my God, this smells soooo good!!” Thank you, thank you!

I always send a Santa hat, to be worn when they open their presents and add a little frivolity and holiday spirit.

Does a Mom good to hear appreciation from her sons. Makes me want to send another box really soon. But, I don’t have to.

He’s coming home tomorrow night for a 10 day leave!

No More Politics as Usual, Nebraska Breaks the Career Politician Mold

September 13, 2012 by info@3QuartersToday.com

I do get really tired of politics and career politicians, so it was refreshing to see a “common” layperson, Deb Fischer, run away with an election or race that is dominated by traditional ingrained politicians who have a long standing reputations and attitudes of “I’m unbeatable.”

Deb Fischer in a parade
Deb Fischer in the Cass County Fair parade

Deb Fischer, a republican,  ran for the Nebraska Senate 2012 race, taking the long time spot of Democrat Senator Ben Nelson. She was a surprise winner of the Nebraska May primary beating out favorite Jon Bruning and Jon Stenburg, both who have long standing reputations in the state. Not only were her two contenders the favorite, they out spent her by a considerable amount.

So why did she win, and why was she ahead in the polls I think it’s for the reason that she is NOT a career politician and she campaigns the old fashioned way, hand shaking and meeting people where ever they gather. In just two events I attended during the summer of 2012, the Syracuse Germanfest and the Cass County  Fair Parade she was there. Democrat Bob Kerry was no where to be seen.

Senate Candidate Deb Fischer in a Nebraska parade
Senate Candidate Deb Fischer in the Syracuse Nebraska parade (July 2012)

Bob Kerry played the dirty mudslinging politics because he couldn’t run on his record, nor service to Nebraska. So he maligned Deb Fischers rancher family and the grazing rights her husbands family has held since 1959.

The Omaha World Herald contrasted the campaign styles of Fischer and Kerry, but I think it gets down to this simple fact. Deb Fischer is a real person, she is tired of politics as usual, and as she has done in Nebraska, she will reach across party lines and isn’t afraid of anyone. She’s spent her life in Nebraska and serving the people of Nebraska to make a state with a balanced budget and low unemployment.

Bob Kerry, where has he been the past 15 years? Living in Greenwich Village New York, looking out for New York citizens, not the Midwest Nebraskans. Most people here don’t want him back.

So impressed is the national political scene at her upward swing she was invited, and spoke at the Republican National Convention

Becoming a U.S. Senator has never been an ambition of mine. But over the last four years, I’ve become dismayed with the record spending, the record debt, and the record unemployment.

The Obama administration has been out of touch with the American people, and they’ve driven our country towards the edge of a fiscal cliff.

So in November I voted for the person who really cares about our state and not a career politician who, I think, had a back room conversation with the Democratic committee on getting an “easy” candidate into office again. This tactic obviously failed and failed big time.

This race reminds me of the 2016 Presidential race in the tone and frustration the American public feels about career politicians. That is the reason why Donald Trump and Ben Carson are leading in the polls.

One Nation: What We Can All Do to Save America’s FutureWhy We Need Donald Trump for President

People are tired of politics and politicians as usual. Let’s get a “real” person in the White House, someone who has succeeded in business or in life and knows what it’s like to risk their life savings on a dream.

I like the idea of Trump, a no nonsense tell it like it is and not afraid to take action and call someone out, especially the media. I also like Dr. Ben Carson who grew up from nothing, fought his way to the top and is soft spoken, but carries a big stick in the form of ideas. Let’s take back Washington DC and clear out the corrupt politicians and let the junior senators like Deb Fisher and Ben Sasse, along with the newly elected congressmen actually get some work done.

No More Politics as Usual

Minding Politics

Adviser: Trump getting rid of “politics as usual”
