Jazz Hipster

28 Mar

I’ve been brought into the world of Jazz, smooth jazz that is by Steve Raybine. Steve is a very accomplished musicians in many areas and has recorded two albums on Chrysalis Records which are played in over 150 radio stations world wide. He has played with the jazz greats such as Dizzy Gillespie, and Michael Feinstein and his resume and accomplishments are just too numerous to list here.

If you are a musician, a music teacher, or a lover of jazz, head over to Steve’s website, it’s packed with all kinds of information on practicing, and teaching tips. Guarantee if you are a student of music you will spend hours reading.

Steve has now branched off  and is now creating digital art in coordination to his musical art. Just like his music, the art ranges from abstract, to surreal,  provocative, and just down right “groovy”.

I’ve had the pleasure of working with Steve at Hamilton Color Lab and printing over 100 different pieces of his digital art. On a personal level we have been creating a video to an upcoming jazz piece.  Can’t give any more information than that yet, but I promise an update when the sneak peak is released.

The “Jazz Hipster” was created by Steve Raybine and and and available for sale as signed  8×10 photographic print, matted to  an 11×14″ frame.

2012 in review

31 Dec

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2012 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

4,329 films were submitted to the 2012 Cannes Film Festival. This blog had 21,000 views in 2012. If each view were a film, this blog would power 5 Film Festivals

Season Of Christmas Continues, Day 3

27 Dec

This is the first year my youngest son wouldn’t be home for Christmas. He’s  a U.S. Marine stationed in California, pulling 24 hour shifts so he can come home on the second block leave.

A week before Christmas he called on the phone and reminded me that he wanted LOTS of food when he got home, especially my cookies, pretzels, and deer jerky. Little did he know a care  package was on it’s way with everything included on his list.

Along with all his favorite treats was this tree , don’t know if he put it up (I hope so), but I wanted to send a piece of home his way. (His older brother, stationed in Arizona, also got a care package)

Christmas tree for my Marine

But it is my youngest Marine who got the special treatment this year. He is a corrections officer in the Brig and received the box during his 24 hr “sleep break”. He called and opened the box on the phone with me, which I love. I got to hear the excitement in his voice as he pulled out the Chocolate Covered Candy Cane Christmas Peeps, Reeses Candy Canes, and deer jerky from the stocking. When he opened the cookie tin, he exclaimed “Oh my God, this smells soooo good!!” Thank you, thank you!

I always send a Santa hat, to be worn when they open their presents and add a little frivolity and holiday spirit.

Does a Mom good to hear appreciation from her sons. Makes me want to send another box really soon. But, I don’t have to.

He’s coming home tomorrow night for a 10 day leave!

Nebraska Senate Race: Deb Fischer

13 Sep

I do get really tired of politics and career politicians, so it’s refreshing to see a “common” layperson, Deb Fischer, run away with an election or race that is dominated by traditional ingrained politicians who have a long standing reputations and attitudes of “I’m unbeatable.”

Deb Fischer in a parade

Deb Fischer in the Cass County Fair parade

Deb Fischer, a republican,  is running for the Nebraska Senate race, taking the long time spot of Democrat Senator Ben Nelson. She was a surprise winner of the Nebraska May primary beating out favorite Jon Bruning and Jon Stenburg, both who have long standing reputations in the state. Not only were her two contenders the favorite, they out spent her by a considerable amount.

So why did she win, and why is she ahead in the polls now? I think it’s for the reason that she is NOT a career politician and she campaigns the old fashioned way, hand shaking and meeting people where ever they gather. In just two events I attended this summer, the Syracuse Germanfest and the Cass County  Fair Parade she was there. Bob Kerry was no where to be seen.

Bob Kerry is is playing the dirty mudslinging politics because he can’t run on his record, nor service to Nebraska. So he maligns Deb Fischers rancher family and the grazing rights her husbands family has held since 1959.

The Omaha World Herald has contrasted the campaign styles of Fischer and Kerry, but I think it gets down to this simple fact. Deb Fischer is a real person, she is tired of politics as usual, and as she has done in Nebraska, she will reach across party lines and isn’t afraid of anyone. She’s spent her life in Nebraska and serving the people of Nebraska to make a state with a balanced budget and low unemployment.

Bob Kerry, where has he been the past 15 years? Living in Greenwich Village New York, looking out for New York citizens, not the Midwest Nebraskans. Most people here don’t want him back.

So impressed is the national political scene at her upward swing she was invited, and spoke at the Republican National Convention

Becoming a U.S. Senator has never been an ambition of mine. But over the last four years, I’ve become dismayed with the record spending, the record debt, and the record unemployment.

The Obama administration has been out of touch with the American people, and they’ve driven our country towards the edge of a fiscal cliff.

So in November I’m voting for the person who really cares about our state and not a career politician who, I think, had a back room conversation with the Democratic committee on getting an “easy” candidate into office again.

Have Extra Tomatoes? Make it Salsa Time

28 Aug

I have an abundance of of tomatoes. Make Salsa!  I’ve made salsa for many years now and I’ve pretty much guessed at the recipe. This year I’m using a recipe my friend Beth used last week. Her family gave it high marks, so I’m using it now.

Ingredients

  • 10 cups peeled tomatoes, chopped, seeded and drained
  • 5 cups chopped onions
  • 5 cups sweet green peppers
  • 1/2 Cup chopped celery
  • Large can of tomato paste
  • 8 cloves crushed garlic
  • 2 TBSP chopped fresh cilantro
  • 1 TBSP salt
  • 1 TBSP Cumin
  • 1 TBSP Chilli powder
  • Powdered Citric acid per instructions ( I use less than required as I don’t like the tart taste)

Directions

  1. Prepare canning jars by washing thoroughly and sterilize in dishwasher or boiling water
  2. Chop the first six ingredients and mix together in a large pot
  3. Add tomato paste and stir
  4. Add salt, cumin, and chili powder as desired to taste and preference
  5. Bring to a boil and reduce heat to simmer.
  6. Cook on simmer for at least one hour until desired thickness
  7. Place lids into water and bring to boil. When water boils turn off heat
  8. Pour salsa into prepared jars, screw on rings
  9. When lids pop the jars are sealed and ready for storage.

Photo Restoration: 1960′s Era

25 Jun

Photo Restoration 1960s

Photo Restoration 1960s

I’ve finally removed hundreds of old photos from nearly a dozen “magnetic” glue photo albums. Not quite acid free. My Mother thought she was doing a good thing in the 1980′s by organizing and putting them into alums, when in actuality they would have been better off in the desk drawer in the original envelopes.

They were so stuck I had to use the pointy end of a fondue fork to pry them off and carefully unstick the back. The paper came off on some, but at least now the family memories are back in a shoebox.

At first glance the photos look to be in pretty good shape, but it only takes one scan and a white correction on levels to see how far these photos have faded.

I’m going to scan the snapshots, but the really old photos from the late 1800′s and early 1990′s I’m going to have professionally scanned at Hamilton Color Lab, where I work. My home scanner will only capture so much detail and they are too important to trust to a Best Buy over the counter scanner.

Photo Story: Here I met my brother for the first time. We were both adopted through Children’s Services of Connecticut. As you can see although my brother Lance was a baby he wasn’t a newborn when he went to our parents. My birthday is Sept. 21, 1965, yet I didn’t go to my parent until January 20, 1966.  Along with photos I now have my adoption records, certificates, and letters from the agency. Still don’t know if I will search or not. Even after witnessing my husband and his son’s adoption reunion.
